Purchasing a Camera - Research

Throughout my research, I’ve found that there are many things to consider when looking for a camera. Of  these important aspects are the lens, the mechanics, whether the camera is tested or untested, etc.

For lenses, a strong recommendation that I found for a first time camera was to have a 50mm lens since it is quite adaptable to most photography. Another interesting thing to consider with lenses is if they are adaptable to analogue and digital or if they are separate. If you are shooting both, it might be more interesting to purchase one lens that works for both cameras, rather than two. It is possible though to get an adapter for lenses in order to make them function for different cameras.

Another thing to consider are the mechanics of the camera. Should you buy a fully mechanic film camera, or should you buy an electric film camera. It turns out that electric film cameras are much cheaper to buy than fully mechanical film cameras, but fully mechanical film cameras are often most sought after due to the appeal of a fully analogue experience. It is important to consider though that some of the electric film cameras require batteries that are no longer produced, and should therefore be avoided.

In addition to all of this, there are many ways to acquire a film camera. One of them being a reputable dealer that has tested the camera before selling it. This is the most sure way to find a properly functioning camera, but it is also possible to find some in other settings like thrift stores. Things to test are the shutter, the shutter speeds, the light meter, film advancement, the door staying closed properly, battery corrosion, the lenses’ focus and aperture, and clearness through the lens and viewfinder.
